Wheatley High School: A Math Success Story, By the Numbers

In March 2023, the Texas Education Agency announced the state intervention of Houston ISD, citing among the causes seven consecutive unacceptable academic ratings for Wheatley High School.

Just three years later, Wheatley High School has dramatically improved Algebra I outcomes.

  • 41 percentage point increase in students meeting grade level standards (17% in 2023 to 58% in 2026).
  • 43 percentage point improvement among economically disadvantaged students meeting grade level standards (17% in 2024 to 60% in 2026)
  • 27 percentage point increase in mastery (4% in 2023 to 31% in 2026)
  • 29 percentage point increase in mastery among economically disadvantaged students (3% in 2023 to 32% in 2026)

Wheatley High School now outperforms the state by 4 percentage points overall in meeting grade level expectations in Algebra 1 — and by 15 percentage points among economically disadvantaged students. (EcoDis: 60% Wheatley, 45% State). Among Black students, Wheatley far surpasses the state with 73% of Wheatley students meeting grade level expectations, versus 43% statewide.

Wheatley’s dramatic rise now puts it alongside — and sometimes above — some of the state’s most prestigious high schools at meeting grade level expectations in Algebra I.

  • Wheatley HS (Houston): 58%
  • Carroll HS (DFW-area): 54%
  • Alamo Heights HS (San Antonio-area): 53%
  • Westlake HS (Austin-area): 46%
