Focus
John joined Texas 2036 in November 2022 after working more than 20 years as a journalist and communicator in Texas.
During his time with Texas 2036, John has played a lead role in writing, editing and publishing the organization’s main publications, including its many blog posts and newsletters distributed directly to Texas 2036’s donors, followers and key stakeholders. He also serves as Texas 2036’s main media contact, coordinating and advising on Texas 2036 analysts’ appearances in external media outlets.
Prior Work Experience
John comes to this role from the University of Texas at Austin where he managed correspondence for the Office of the President. Prior to that, he managed communications for the Texas chapter of the Audubon Society and was a press officer for the Texas Health and Human Services Commission.
John was born and raised in Atlanta, but he got to Texas as fast as he could. He started his journalism career on the South Plains at the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal (on Sept. 12, 2001!) but moved to Austin for the chance to cover the Legislature for Quorum Report and then the Texas Tribune.
While not a native of Texas, he prefers to think of himself as a Texan by marriage. And like many Austinites, he enjoys looking on the weekends with his wife for new, interesting places to eat or imbibe a craft cocktail. He also enjoys playing tennis.
