Summary 

The Accounting Manager is a key member of the Texas 2036 Operations team, contributing to the accuracy and efficiency of the organization’s financial operations. This role oversees the day-to-day accounting functions, including invoicing, credit card reconciliation, account coding, accounts payable (AP) processing, accounts receivable (AR) processing, and month-end close preparation. Reporting to the Vice President, Finance the Manager will work closely with other members of the finance team to maintain accurate financial records, prepare financial reports, and ensure compliance with internal controls. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented and able to manage multiple priorities while contributing to the organization’s financial stability and reporting accuracy.

Responsibilities 

  • Manage the invoicing process, ensuring timely and accurate billing to clients, partners, or stakeholders.
  • Manage with development operations the receivable process, ensuring timely and accurate invoicing of receivables from donors and other revenue sources to ensure accurate financial tracking of donations, pledges, and in-kind contributions.
  • Oversee the reconciliation of credit card transactions, ensuring that all expenditures are properly accounted for and coded to the appropriate accounts.
  •  Perform accurate coding of expenditures to ensure proper classification in the accounting system, supporting efficient reporting and analysis.
  •  Process accounts payable (AP) transactions, including reviewing and entering invoices, verifying accuracy, and ensuring timely payments to vendors.
  •  Prepare and reconcile bank accounts and other balance sheet accounts on a monthly basis, ensuring all transactions are recorded accurately and discrepancies are resolved.
  • Perform the month-end close process, including entering organizational activity, reviewing account balances, and preparing necessary journal entries to ensure accurate reporting.
  •  Support the year-end close process ensuring timely and accurate year end close procedures, as assigned. Participate in the annual financial statement audit.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements, balance sheets, cash flow, budgetary and donor reports, including preparing budgets for grant proposals and funding applications.
  • Prepare and apply allocations of expenditures across various accounts, ensuring the accurate distribution of costs based on budgetary guidelines.
  •  Properly enter transactions into the accounting software, ensuring the integrity of financial data and supporting efficient financial statement preparation.
  • Maintain accurate financial records and ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards (GAAP).
  • Leverage technology to improve efficiency and accuracy in accounting functions.
  • Help with regulatory compliance, including IRS Form 990 preparation and other nonprofit-specific filings.
  • Contribute to a positive workplace experience by being available to assist with in-office tasks as assigned and supporting operations related in-person questions or needs.
  • Contribute to the success of the organization by completing all other tasks as assigned.

Required Qualifications 

  • Desire to see Texas be the best place to live and work through 2036 and beyond
  • Knowledge of Texas history, diversity, and contemporary culture preferred
  •  4+ years of accounting experience, with a strong understanding of accounts payable and receivable, invoicing, reconciliation, and month-end close processes.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in accounting software, with experience in accounting, recordkeeping and maintaining accurate financial records.
  • Strong knowledge of credit card reconciliation, bank reconciliation, and account coding.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and external stakeholders.
  •  Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, GSuite, and experience with accounting systems, preferably Intacct, Bill/Divvy, and Nexonia.
  •  Ability to work independently, solve problems, and maintain confidentiality.

Compensation and Benefits 

Texas 2036 offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience. The target salary range for this position is $70,000 – $90,000. Employees are eligible for a comprehensive benefits package, including health, vision, and dental insurance with employee premiums paid by Texas 2036, a cell phone stipend, and a 401K matching program. Location

The Accounting Manager is a hybrid role based in Texas 2036’s Austin office. The Manager will be expected to be present in the office during the work day, at least two days a week on average. Additional office days may be required as needed. The Manager must be willing to travel (up to 10%) to other cities in Texas for meetings with Texas 2036 staff, board members, advisors, staff, stakeholders, and partners.
